About twelve years ago* we were invited to a friend's soiree to celebrate her twenty fifth wedding anniversary.

'Twenty five years!' I said to her, 'how have you managed to stay together that long?'

'That's easy,' she answered, 'you just don't leave.'

Today is our twenty fifth wedding anniversary and I find that Joanna was quite right. Our marriage is a bit like our old bed: it fits our shapes, we both have our comfy spots in it, there are a few lumps in the mattress that sometimes disturb the sleep of one or other of us but we have become accustomed to it and can mostly shift over and nod off again. A new one might be exciting but it would take years for it to become quite so accommodating. The odd rampant spring not withstanding.

The two of us, a bit worse for wear, at the dog end of a party a few years ago. Stevie loves this photo which is why I've chosen it, even though I was much plumper then.

*where has the time gone!?

Congratulations to both of you!! We celebrate #32 this week. Gosh, I feel old.

Congrats! The body language in the photo bodes well for a happy marriage. Some things you can't fake. Our 30th in November - beating the first one by a couple of years.
And so it goes.

Golden ~ thank you, and you're right it does.

Willow ~ 32! You must have been a child bride. Congratulations.

Pat ~ it is just possible that I was leaning in so close because I could no longer stand without help!

Stop showing off!

eryl - even if i add both my marriages together i don;t get 25!!! good stuff! the description: bed/marriage is so apt isn't it!!! marriage is so unlikely and becomes moreso as you get well into it but somehow it also becomes easier to accept how odd it is!! congratulations to both of you. steven

Woohoo! Congratulations!!!
We should have done this wedding dress thing in time for your celebrations. Still, when we do, I hope Stevie realises he needs to be dressed in a tux (or kilt)

Like wow, congratulations to you both! I feel like I should be sending you champagne flutes or something. Ah well, it's the thought that counts. Bed image wonderfully done.
But what the hell's going on? 25 years? Girls from Gillingham can get married at 15?

Savannah said to come over - and I've had such a lovely time here, really enjoyed reading and listening.

BTW congrats on the 25

If you were plumper then, you must look like a rake now!
It's a lovely pic.

Congratulations and wow...I thought (from the photos on your blog header) you were about 18 years old..truly!!! and I thought wow, this blogger is about 18 years old and has Nietzsche quotes, wow.

Savannah ~ thank you very much, XXXXX

Steven ~ marriage is a very odd thing: the triumph of hope over adversity, especially for those of you have done it more than once!

Kim ~ if you can get Stevie into a kilt I'll owe you one!

Titus ~ Gillingham is the dark side.

Lulu ~ thank you. I'm so glad you've enjoyed your time here. I will return your kind visit shortly.

Scarlet ~ not really, just less covered. Thank you, on both counts, X

Gleaner ~ ha! Cameras can lie. I recently came across a boy who must be about 18 and can quote Nietzsche, it was impressive.

OMG! what a great post today. . .

Congratulations ! Great picture !

You must have been a child bride when you got married you look about 20 in the picture. . .
I should be that lucky to look as good as you do in the picture "even though I was much plumper then" only in a dream.

Plus you used the word... soiree ! extra points for that.

I hope you've had a wonderful day to celebrate all those years together.
Congratulations to both of you !

The best of everything to yourself and himself.

As for your 'plumper' observation, you must be seriously underweight at the moment!

Derrick said...

Belated congratulations to you both. That old bed is obviously doing fine!

Barry said...

Congratulations on surviving each other and the lumpy bed. You both looked great in your photo.

Our own bed always feels the most comfortable after we've been away, now matter how expensive and ergonomically designed the other beds were.

Changing your bed could be your transformational moment!

Savannah sent me—congratulations. We've been married 25 years this year s well, and I know what you mean about the old mattress.

Parsnip ~ soiree is such a good word isn't it?

Thank you for all your kind words.

Debra ~ we had a lovely day, thank you.

Conan ~ hey! Thank you for your kind wishes. I could now embark on an essay about fashion, culture, personal preferences and bmi, but suffice to say I took up running some time ago and now have that runner's look. So now that undefined arm looks chubby to me.

Derrick ~ it does very well with our new thick mattress cover!

Barry ~ what are you saying!!!?

Scout ~ thank you and congratulations to you too.

Congrats! You look awesome by the way-don't ever quit smoking, it suits you.

Eryl Shields said...

Hi Supernana ~ you wouldn't say that if you'd seen me two minutes ago standing at the back door in the rain with a hat pulled down over my head just to get a fix!

Congratulations on reaching such a great milestone! My parents were married 53 years before my mother's death three years ago.

When my wife and I were married seven years ago, I lamented that I would certainly not achieve that record of longevity, but that would likely be a function of age and not desire (fifty years would put us both into our 80s).

We had our 33rd on aug 14. I did a four past post on it starting Aug 13. Your friend was right...you just don't leave.

Eryl Shields said...

BA ~ Thank you. Living into your 80s these days isn't so unusual, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Ellen ~ she was.
